I didn’t learn my lesson (Fein’s Deluge reveal)

After unhanding my interactive fiction project Raid on the Silver City to my editors (which you can read about here), one thought echoed through my mind:

FUCK interactive fiction.

And then, not even a week later, what do I do but start another, completely separate, work of interactive fiction?

My excuse for this one is that it’s different, and it really is. While I designed Raid on the Silver City to read more like a linear story, this new project plays much more like a video game. It resembles the “open map” interactive fiction structure denominated in Sam Kabo Ashwell’s post, Standard Patterns in Choice-Based Games, and it’s been a great challenge and joy to create, so far.

Here’s a screenshot of the new project in Twine 2 (SugarCube), the program in which I’m creating it. Hopefully, the resemblance to Sam Kabo Ashwell’s “open map” structure diagram is clear to you.

So what is it called?

Fein’s Deluge.

What is it about?

Fein’s Deluge is a work of “open map” interactive fiction — essentially a text-based game. You explore a spatial environment, the village of Fein’s Deluge, while excavating an underlying story in a non-linear manner and “solving a crime.”

I’ll leave it at that for now.

When will it be finished?

Well, I’ve learnt at least one lesson from Raid on the Silver City, so I won’t assign any hard dates to the release of Fein’s Deluge. But I’m proud to say that, as of today, it’s ready for playtesting!

After I’m bored playtesting it, I’ll refine the writing and then unhand it to some playtesters and editors that aren’t me. Once I have synthesised their feedback and edits, I’ll release Fein’s Deluge in a similar manner to which I’ll release Raid on the Silver City, but probably before I release Raid on the Silver City.

Ha!

Who’s illustrating the cover?

Who else but Roderick Fernandes? He was there for me for Raid on the Silver City and he’s here for me now. The illustration below is Rod’s work. It’s a basic model of the village of Fein’s Deluge, which we’re using as a reference for the 3D modelling, concept art, and cover art to come. It’s exciting to see this twisted village come to life.

Who are the playtesters and editors?

I sort of have none, so if you’re interested in playtesting and editing Fein’s Deluge, please contact me.

Thanks

Thank you for your time, and I hope you are at least a fraction as excited for Fein’s Deluge as I am. That fraction is worth more to me than you know.
